El Paso County expands recycling program

There’s a new recycling bin, for common recyclables, at the El Paso County Household Hazardous Waste Facility.

You can now drop off things like aluminum, paper, cardboard, glass and plastic, all for free. They’ll take plastics numbered one through seven, just look on the bottom of plastic items to see what number they are. They can’t take plastic bags, plastic wrap or Styrofoam products.

The new container at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility is a single stream container, meaning you don’t have to sort anything. They do ask that you flatten boxes and make sure you clean off any food or liquids left over on any food containers. County officials say anything that has leftovers on it can contaminate the whole bin, and then it will get sent to the landfill.

The Household Hazardous Waste Facility is located at 3255 Akers Dr. that’s east of Powers Blvd. and north of Constitution Ave. You can drop off recyclables Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and on the second Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Competition for the Green, Glam and Gorgeous

Another News First 5 Producer, Ariel Mata, recently sent me a link  for a unique beauty competition in the UK and Ireland. The contestants not only represent their country but also Mother Earth.

The “Miss Earth” competition gives out four titles to the top four girls: Miss Air, Miss Water, Miss Fire, with the Miss Earth title being the top prize. The winners work as advocates for environmental issues. Its a great take on a tradtional beauty competition, we just need to start one here.

Recycling Dilemma

I have lived in Pueblo for about a month now and I am having the hardest time finding an easy place to  drop off my recycling.

For example, when I called the Pueblo Health Dept. yesterday to request a recycling guide, the automated message said that there isn’t a place in the county to recycle plastics! I was amazed by this. I would think plastic is a pretty common item that a lot of people recycle, but apparently if you live in Pueblo you either have to drive to another county or just throw away your plastics.

If anyone knows a good place to drop off recyclables, not just plastics, in Pueblo, PLEASE let me know!

I will keep you updated on my search for recycling drop off. Hopefully the recycling guide I requested will provide some answers

Hello world!

Will soon be blogging on this site about all things “green”/eco friendly or whatever you want to call it.

I moved to Pueblo, CO about a month ago to work as a News Producer at KOAA, News First 5.

If you are a “green” company, person, or organization I would love to hear from you!

Return soon for my first official post
