Quick Changes This Weekend

leave a comment

A weak frontal boundary combined with an upper level disturbance will increase the clouds late tonight through tomorrow. A few isolated showers may be possible tomorrow through Friday as the frontal boundary becomes stationary along the coast and then begins to move back to the north as a warm front Friday night. Saturday will be very warm ahead of a strong cold front that will produce a good chance of healthy thunderstorms on Sunday. Colder conditions with near freezing temperatures at night should follow early-mid next week.

I’ve been recapping the incredible hurricane season and am highlighting hurricanes Katrina and Rita from a meteorological and climatological perspective on the 6 and 10pm newscasts. Comprehensive information on Katrina and Rita can be found on NASA’s website.

More Sun

Looks like the fine weather will last a couple of more days. A weak front will slide into the area Thursday, but other than a couple of clouds, I don’t think you’ll notice this one. We will see a warm up for the early part of the weekend before another front heads our way Sunday. Looks like the rain chances may be even lower than yesterday, and the severe weather event doesn’t look as likely. The cold air moving in next week should drop our temps a few degrees below normal, the models have warmed significantly since yesterday.

Radiational Cooling!

leave a comment

We should see excellent radiational cooling tonight as high pressure movesoverhead, llowing for nearly calm winds, dry air and crystal clear skies. Radiational cooling is the process by which warmer air near the surface/ground radiates into the higher parts of the atmosphere yielding a net cooling below. In our case, with dew points expected to be in the upper 20s to lower 30s, we should see temperatures dropping to the mid-30s by morning. There may be some patchy frost around the dawn hour too.

Milder weather and more clouds should move in after tomorrow with another warm and unsettled weekend on tap. As Dave indicated, this weekend won’t be a wash-out, but there will be the risk of storms for Sunday. There may be a strong, or severe weather risk Sunday, but it’s too early to tell weather this will develop over Louisiana or occur farther to the east.

Highs this weekend will warm well into the 70s, but should cool again nicely Monday behind the next frontal system.

Sunny and Cool

leave a comment

Chilly temps today with highs only in the low 60s, but a bit warmer for the end part of the week. It looks like things will become a bit unsettled with some isolated showers for the weekend, and storms possible early next week. Right now it doesn’t look like the weekend will be a washout, but a couple of showers will pass by. Might get cold by the middle of next week, I’ll keep you posted.

What's Next?

leave a comment

A stable and cool pattern has returned to Acadiana, but as always around here, it will be short-lived. Clouds and milder air should begin returning by Thursday with the chance of a few sprinkles Friday into Saturday as the warmer Gulf air rushes back before the next big weather-maker.

It appears that we will be in store for another round of strong thunderstorms, possibly severe weather, with the next system around late Sunday and/or Monday.

Storms Moving Out

leave a comment

If you awakened to thunder this morning, don’t expect it to last for long. A quick line of storms should be out of Lafayette by 5am, and out of the Acadiana area by 9. If you are traveling east toward Baton Rouge or New Orleans they will see the rain chance up until noon or so. Expect clearing skies through the day and cooler temps than we had over the weekend. Tonight will be chilly, and a gradual warmup is expected later this weekend. Hope you all had a nice extended Thanksgiving holiday weekend and are ready to gear up for another work week.

Overnight Showers

leave a comment

Cooler weather is on the way for Monday as a strong cold front brings some relief. Overnight we could hear a few rumbles of thunder and rain showers but most of the severe weather looks to stay north of Acadiana. Tomorrow we will reach our high early in the day and cool through the afternoon. For the rest of the week high pressure settles in and temperatures in the 60s stick around for a while. Have a great week!

Drying out!

leave a comment

After a wet Saturday, expect drier weather for Sunday. Temperatures will stay warm for one more day but a trough will bring a slight chance of showers late Sunday night into Monday. For the work week cooler temperatures move in and rain chances stay out of the forecast until Friday when the next weather maker comes.

Storms for Late Saturday

leave a comment

It looks like a vigorous system will deliver a good chance of rain and thunderstorms late Saturday into Saturday night. The risk of strong storms is pretty high while there is still doubt on the threat of severe weather…Kari Hall will be watching it closely.

Unsettled and very warm weather is expected for Sunday with cooler air getting here late Monday. It appears that we are entering the typical, more changeable, winter weather pattern. Speaking of which, tonight on our 10pm newscast I’ll be talking about what we can expect this winter. I derived this information from the Climate Prediction Center and from our local climatological records.

Will it snow here this winter? Well you’ll have to tune at at 10pm!

Wetter Weekend

leave a comment

Looks like shoppers will miss the bulk of the rain today, but showers and thunderstorms will become likely for Saturday. Some of these may dump some heavy rain, some models are showing up to 3 inches of rain in local areas between tonight and early Sunday. We could use the rain, hopefully the severe weather will miss us, but some storms could be packing a punch with gusty winds. Speaking of winds, it will be breezy for the next couple of days, and colder weather expected next week.
