So I wrote a post a while ago about the doctor warning Nicole to avoid pasta and juice. He was concerned about a couple things, including the risk of gestational diabetes.
Well, Nicole has gestational diabetes. The good news is that it only lasts through the pregnancy and as long as we’re careful the baby should be fine.
We both wanted to bring some awareness to both men and women about gestational diabetes. The main thing we have to do now is manage her blood sugar, which means she takes blood sugar tests twice a day and has a strict diet set by a dietician and the doctor.
An alert reader commented on a previous post of mine, warning us to be careful about eating too much pasta and juice. I wanted to thank the reader, but accidentally deleted that comment and several others while I was deleting spam. Anyway, thank you for the warning, it helped us get a jump on learning exactly what gestational diabetes is.
Some risk factors for gestational diabetes include:
African or Hispanic ancestry
Being older than 25 when pregnant
Family history of diabetes
Giving birth to a previous baby that weighed more than 9 pounds
Unexplained miscarriage or death of a newborn
Here are some more links to information about gestational diabetes:
It was a melancholy mood earlier today as we said goodbye to the set at the KOAA studios. Jordan even teared up a little when he saw the sports desk in the dumpster outside.
I think I’ll miss the platform covered in blue shag carpet the most. Especially that creak everytime you stepped on it to walk over to the news desk. The more weight I gained, the more it creaked. I’m going to miss that dance the 2 of us did… step, step, creak… step, step creak. I hope the new set and I will have just as much fun.
Here are a few pictures on day 1 of the deconstruction.
That’s the top of the old desk. You can’t see it, but there’s years of abc gum on the other side of it.
An orphanage in Haiti has it’s U-S headquarters based in Colorado Springs and they’re fielding hundreds of concerned calls and emails.
Many of the calls to the group “God’s Littlest Angels” are from adoptive parents who are concerned about their children in the orphanage. The Haitian adoption process takes at least 2 years, but it’s common for parents to know and often times visit the children they’re adopting.
“We just have been trying to take the calls and answer the emails as fast as we can,” said Jean Bell, director of the agencies US office based in Colorado Springs.
The good news is the orphanage is in the mountains outside Port au Prince, and the orphanage is still standing. All the children and employees are safe.
“We just have been trying to take the calls and answer the emails as fast as we can,” said Jean Bell, director of the agencies US office based in Colorado Springs.
The good news is the orphanage is in the mountains outside Port au Prince, and the orphanage is still standing. All the children and employees are safe.
“We have a hundred babies in the main house, 0 to age 2,” Bell said, “and in our toddler house we have 60-70 children up to age 6.”
But there’s another orphanage that roughly a dozen Pikes Peak region families are reportedly adopting kids from, and for those families getting information is painfully slow.
“A wall had fallen on one of the workers and another one of the workers was injured in his eye,” Ian Millar told us. Millar says he and his wife are adopting 3 children from the orphanage Maison des Enfants de Dieu, which is in downtown Port au Prince.
So far he says he and the other families have been told the kids there are safe, “but that was before the aftershocks so we don’t know anything since then. We have not been able to get any information,” he said.
The other big questions adoptive parents have is what the quake will mean for their adoption process.
“We definitely haven’t lost hope,” said Millar, “We definitely are hoping that we can get the children home and maybe even get them home sooner because of this crisis, we don’t know. But considering all of the government buildings have collapsed we’re fairly discouraged right now let’s just put it that way.”
Hope you’re having a great Christmas! We’re winding down. First time Nicole and I have been able to spend all Christmas day together and it was great!
Here’s a shot of Nicole teaching the kids how to make a gingerbread house. In this picture she’s trying convince them that Santa told her it’s OK if she eats that bag of gumdrops instead of putting them on the house. It didn’t work.
My wife did this amazing story about a baby born without a brain.
I won’t even try to explain the story to you, but you should watch it.
By noon today it’s already been viewed by 80,000 people.
Get your tissues ready, you will never forget this one.
UPDATE: News First 5′s video box that counts views apparently only goes up to 99,999 then starts over at 0.
By 5pm this story had hit 99,999 and gone beyond it. As of 10pm the view county was roughly 12,000, which means 112,000.
By comparison the NF5 website’s been getting about 80,000 views a week. So this one story has had more viewers in less than one day than the entire NF5 website typically gets in a week.
So Nicole & I go to see the baby doctor every few weeks and on one visit he’s looking at her bloodwork tests and other personal health info on his computer and he exclaims, “Uh-oh!”
Of course, we’re both stunned and thinking something’s wrong. So we say “What?”
He says, “What have you been eating? You’ve gained a few pounds!”
ALERT… ALERT… ALERT… runs through my mind and I of course I tell Nicole, “you look beautiful, don’t listen to this guy.”
OK, OK, I just sat there, knowing we were in a CODE RED NICOLE situation, which means I better not say anything.
So after the doctor successfully dodges Nicole’s first swing, he explains that pregnant women gain weight much faster because of all those “hormony things.” <OK he really said what it was in medical terms, and it had something to do with hormones.>
So he then says pasta and orange juice can really pack on the pounds.
It just so happens, Nicole loves pasta and orange juice.
After we left, she cut back on orange juice and pasta, for about 5 minutes.
No, I’m not as quick as the doctor. Nicole has a vicious right hook.
<Just kidding she let me post this. And yes, she does look beautiful! And today is our engagement anniversary!>
