Warning! Gestational diabetes happens, it’s happening to us

Posted at 6:01 pm under Jarman

So I wrote a post a while ago about the doctor warning Nicole to avoid pasta and juice.  He was concerned about a couple things, including the risk of gestational diabetes.

Well, Nicole has gestational diabetes.  The good news is that it only lasts through the pregnancy and as long as we’re careful the baby should be fine.

We both wanted to bring some awareness to both men and women about gestational diabetes.  The main thing we have to do now is manage her blood sugar, which means she takes blood sugar tests twice a day and has a strict diet set by a dietician and the doctor.

An alert reader commented on a previous post of mine, warning us to be careful about eating too much pasta and juice.  I wanted to thank the reader, but accidentally deleted that comment and several others while I was deleting spam.  Anyway, thank you for the warning, it helped us get a jump on learning exactly what gestational diabetes is.

Some risk factors for gestational diabetes include:

  • African or Hispanic ancestry
  • Being older than 25 when pregnant
  • Family history of diabetes
  • Giving birth to a previous baby that weighed more than 9 pounds
  • Unexplained miscarriage or death of a newborn

Here are some more links to information about gestational diabetes:

American Diabetes Association,  Mayo Clinic, WebMD,  Google health

    Thanks James for the info.

First, prayers for Nichole and for you,
My wife had it with our 2nd 22 years ago before they knew ar much as today. Italian background with family history of Diabetes.
Low carbs is the main concern. Pasta, grains, sweets of course. Try to stay under 90 mg per day.
Greek and for Middle Eastern background as I am are also risk factors.

Try the Green Diet. Lots of vegetables, the Green leafy are best. Careful on fruits. High in sugar.

    Blessings,
    David

    Good advice David,

James and I decided to share this, because it was so unexpected and we hope it might help.

I really don’t fit any of the precursors for gestational diabetes. I did, however, eat like an animal for the first few months of my pregnancy. I ate way too much and justified it as a craving. I also allowed stress to really affect me.

I truly believe those two things helped put me in this spot. If you are pregnant, it doesn’t mean you can’t eat what you want. If I could do it again, I would have stopped eating when I was full. I would have also paid closer attention to how much sugar and carbs I was eating. It’s something that I will continue after the baby’s born, because it’s just a healthier way to live.

I still eat fast food when I’m in a pinch. You can look up the nutrition facts for what you are eating and some of it will blow you away. MY doctor said 60 mg of carbs for my 3 meals. There is food on there that goes way above. It is pretty educational, even if you aren’t pregnant.

Just saw this blog, thought I would chime in too – better late than never they say. I had gestational diabetes with my first son, completely caused by nothing but me being a total glutton during my first trimester. I had such awful “morning” sickness, that unless I kept my stomach full I was sick. I was eating 2 Subway footlongs and 2 milkshakes every day! Well, the doc spotted what was going on and put all that to a halt. I ate steamed veggies for lunch every day and cut out the fast food, but it was too late and it was just something I had to cope with until my son was born. He weighed 9 lbs, 4 oz, but I lost 35 pounds just giving birth! Talk about water retention!! Anyway, 20 years later, I am at my healthiest and he is a strapping 6’3″ Navy Hospital Corpsman all about being fit. Listen to your doctor, read those nutrition labels, and remember stress will not help you or your baby. My very best wishes to you all.

RE: James Jarman » Warning! Gestational diabetes happens, it’s happening to us. I came across this post while searching for meals to eat while pregnant and found it to be compelling. Something to think about.

It happened to me too…with our 14 year old. There is a 70 % chance you will get it if you have another child…I lucked out. Daniel is 10 and I did not get it with him. BTW…we have had 6 kids, lost 2 of them. My prayers are with you to have a healthy and happy little one.

    Hi Guys!
I strive to catch ‘em all ! Meaning ways to make money.
Since I am a student in New York city, I live one day at a time and I never know when
I’ll be on my last dollar therefore I need a steady income which is hard to find.
Being a full time student and working part time is a hassle.there’s not enough hours in a day.
So I might as well close down the hatch, stock up on water and get ready for something to come.
Today is a sunny du though. I can open my hatch.
I found proactol a weight loss pill and
it helps me get that steady income that I’ve been looking for.
All I have to do is spend a few hours a day on the computer and the rest of the 22 hours focus on school work.
My architecture major buddies know what I’m talking ’bout.
Since I take proactol myself due to my not so great weight. I can tell you it’s safe.
So do me and yourself a favor and check it out. Diet pills
    Talk to u.
