SNL

SNL is one of my favorite shows. I have watched for SO MANY YEARS!  i loved it back in the early 2000′s when it was not that good.  One of my favorite skits is Grady Wilson.  Click here to watch a great one!!! Grady Wilson is played by Kenan Thompson.

I also like is “Whats up with that!” skits too.  The one girl who I can not stand is Kristen Wiig.

She is funny, but all her bits have the same stupid voice.

Big SNL Fan, wish the season went a little longer!

Pike HotShots

There are days when you get a cool story, and this was one of them.  I went with Bill Folsom up to Monument, to the U.S. Forrest Service, Pike Hotshots area.  They were doing a media day and training. From the time they get the call until they have to leave is under 2 hours to deploy to a fire.  The Hotshots will go into the fire and create a fire line to hold the fire from moving. There are now about 10 HotShot crews around the nation. These are the elite wildland fire fighters.

Here is the story.

SNL

Saturday Night Live and I share a common thing, we share the same Birth Year, so it is close to my heart.  For the longest time SNL was VERY VERY FUNNY, then they had the not so funny years, and now they are BACK.  Over the weekend they aired the best sports skits….

Here are 2 of my FAVS!

I am not the biggest fan of DMB, but I really Like this song, it was at the Grammy’s and they also did this for SNL.

It’s hard to tell a person by it’s cover

Just like the saying,  you can’t judge a book by it’s cover, the same can be said for people.  In the past few weeks, the City of Colorado Springs has been dealing with the issue of “Tent City”. The homeless living around the city in tents, mostly on the trails and by the creek.
One City Councilman wants the homeless to be able to camp there, cause he too was once homeless. Here is his story

How can you have any pudding if you don’t eat yer meat?

I am told there is this cool story about a Meat Cutting competition.

Meat Cutting

I head out to Monument Ice rink to shoot this story, and there is about 10 – 12 tables set on the ice.  I meet the people, who are involved and do some quick interviews. I have about 10 min to get the interviews, which go well. I am going there thinking this is going to be a Nat pkg, but as I quickly learn, this may not be possilible. They are all vying for the chance to win $20,000 for being the best meat cutter.  So they have to consintrate, Meat Cutting

and I can not mic them up and talk to them as they are working.  So I get my 2nd interview and then they get ready to start.  Then the worse thing that could happens…. happens… They turn the music on the overhead speakers.  I call the desk to advise that I do not think I can do this as a nat pkg cause my nats are all muisc and this will not work.

I shoot all the video, and think, that maybe I can pull this off, cause I know I have some GREAT sound, and some cool video.

I come back and find out that I am going to have a reporter write the story, which makes me feel good, since it would be really hard to pull this off.

I thought the story turned out good.  Here it is…

There is a pothole in a bike lane!

Abby and I get sent out to a Pothole in a bike lane.  The first thing out of my mouth is, “Is our video a pothole?”  and the answer is yes.  A photgs worst nightmare, is a story with no or very little video.  Lately, I like the challenge of trying to figure out what I am going to need to do a good story, with little video. Every-time I get in the truck going to a story, be it breaking news or a pot hole story, I start to think what I need to shoot, and how I am going to do it.  With my sticks (Tripod), handheld, low angle, how do I shoot the interview, I try to think of me editing the story and what am I going to need to edit, cover all my bases. I do this on every story.

Pot hole

We get there and we see it. It’s a pothole.  We talk to the homeowner who called us. We are doing a interview with her, and she sees 2 guys biking so we stop and run over and get a few shots of them riding by, and Abby stops them, and they tell us that they have called the city pothole hotline several times, since August.  The homeowner tells us the same.  Nothing has been done.

Pot Hole

We shoot all over interviews and we shoot a standup for our story.

Abby gets back to the car to call the city and find out why this has not been fixed while I shoot some more.

Pot Hole

We head back to the station and we still do not have any word from the city. Come to find out, the city does not think the pot hole is theirs and reffers us to utilities.

They do some research and discover, that indeed, it is a utilities problem. I go get some sound at 4:00 pm from the utilities and Abby writes.

I come back and edit the story, and all is well.

At 5:45 pm, neighbors call and advise us that a hour and 45 min after it is discovered who’s pot hole this is, the hole is fixed.  2 months a problem can not get fixed, a few calls later, and BAM! Fixed. I love this business.

Here is the video.
